Maid of Honor / Sister Speeches – Recent bereavement

If there is a recent passing in the bride or groom’s family or close friends, then it might be appropriate to acknowledge them as they might be a significant part of their lives. It might be a good idea to check with the bride and groom about this first.

“A wedding is not only a happy celebration but also a time to remember the people who are important in your life. And so let us all pause for a moment and say a silent prayer for all those here today who are missing loved ones, especially [give names if appropriate].”

“I was going to share the job of Maid of Honor with Rebecca’s childhood friend, Alison. Alison had been seriously ill for some time, however, and sadly she passed away last month. Everyone who know her, will always remember the incredible zest for life she had and her boundless energy. And I know that right now, she’s looking down and saying: ‘Just get on with it girl, and make sure you grab the last bottle of champagne!’”

“At this point I’d like to take a moment to mention Kary’s childhood friend Janice, who cannot be here today because of bereavement in her own family. Our thoughts are with her at this difficult time, and we send her and her family all our love and condolences.”
